What is PBIS?

In English y en Español:

Dear Parents,

Our school is participating in an important district initiative. It is called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support?

PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a system that enhances the capacity of schools to educate and support positive behavior for all students by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans.

PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

What is PBIS at our school?

Southbridge Academy has adopted a unified set of behavioral expectations. You will see these expectations posted throughout the school and your child will be learning them during his or her first days at school. Our unified behavioral expectations, found in every classroom and non-classroom setting in the school, are as follows:

Expectation 1: Safe

Expectation 2: Ready to learn

Expectation 3: Respect

Expectation 4: Responsible

As part of our PBIS process, teachers and other staff members use evidence-based practices to increase student learning and decrease classroom disruptions. To promote student understanding of the expectations, the Southbridge Academy staff provide:

  • Continuous opportunities for teaching and reteaching of the school-wide expectations.

  • Students with more praise than corrections

  • Use of pre-correction, prompting, and redirection as we teach.

  • Positive, immediate, frequent, and explicit feedback.

We also have a school-wide system of consequences.

If you have questions about Positive Behavior Support, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher. We look forward to a wonderful year of teaching your child!

Queridos padres,

“Gotcha Cards” are a school-wide opportunity to present students with positive praise the moment that they display behaviors such as:  being safe, being respectful, being responsible, and being ready to learn.  When a teacher notices a student demonstrating one of these behaviors, a “Gotcha Card” is written out immediately in order for the teacher to give specific praise about the positive behavior.  Students are able to use the “Gotcha Cards” in the school store and also in individual teachers' classroom stores.  Each “Gotcha Card” is worth 25 points which can be saved up and spent on schoolwide activities such as a pizza party, an ice cream sundae social, a bingo game, etc.

What do students do with all those points and Gotcha Cards?

    • Teacher Stores: Students can also use points and Gotcha Cards in Teacher Stores located in the classrooms
    • Special Activities: In addition to shopping at the school store, students can use points and Gotcha Cards to buy into special activities such as
      • Pizza on Fridays
      • Bingo games
      • Hot Chocolate Social
      • Ice Cream Social
      • Holiday Celebrations
Check In Check Out (CICO)
Check In Check Out (CICO) is a tier 2 intervention providing students the opportunity to collaborate with a CICO coach to set achievable daily goals. Students selected to participate in CICO receive positive adult attention through feedback from their CICO coach and their teachers about their progress. Progress monitoring is an essential aspect of this intervention to determine when students have achieved their daily behavioral goals. Goal attainment is incentivized and rewarded, and parents are encouraged to work with their students and the school to maximize behavioral gains.

Academy Parent Partners: Recognition
Parent engagement and collaboration is essential to a student’s progress.  Recognizing parents who maintain a two-way communication channel and are actively involved in the decision-making process of their student’s academic development is important to us.  Once a year, Southbridge Academy staff recognizes parent partners who are actively collaborating with us by awarding them with a certificate and a letter from the principal.
Student Leadership Team

PBIS Student Leadership Team
PBIS Student Leadership Team is a character education program that builds leadership skills and educates students on current challenges that high school students may face. The team is open to 11th and 12th-grade students interested in using their student voice to promote a positive school culture. Student leaders will be trained in learning to address important challenges such as doing the right thing, turning conflict into cooperation, motivating others. Students who participate in the Student Leadership Team are expected to serve as role models and promote a positive school culture
